Matt is the architect of Lyri’s complex LLM world—leading the effort to scale Lyri's machine learning and LLM technologies.

As the creator of ELMo, the first general purpose LLM capable of state-of-the-art performance across many tasks, Matt has long been a leader in NLP, machine learning, and multimodal AI research. He’s passionate about Lyri’s opportunity to deploy frontier AI technologies to billions of users across the globe in a safe and controllable way.

Before co-founding Lyri, Matt was a Senior Research Scientist at the Allen Institute, where his research focused on LLMs and general purpose NLP. His projects and contributions have received over 33,000 citations and numerous awards, including the Best Paper for NAACL 2018 for ELMo—cited as one of the top 10 most foundational papers in AI.
